Harry
I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, a city that has the impressive Southern Alps towering over it. As a young child all I could do was stare at the mountains from the city and I couldn’t wait to go see them up close one day. From a very young age I had a strange fascination with skiing - even though I had never been - but somehow I just knew I would love it.
I had never skied - despite the fact we lived under 2 hours from over 10 ski areas - but in 2001 I managed to convince my dad to take me to Mt Hutt to try skiing for the first time. I picked up skiing very quickly and not to long after that first on snow experience, I knew I wanted to pursue a life in the ski industry and the mountains.
Throughout my teenage years, my parents work gave me the opportunity to travel to Wanaka and ski at Treble Cone and Cardrona. I have this vivid memory of seeing some Rookie Academy trainers ski down one of the steepest off piste runs at Treble Cone when I was 15 - they looked so cool and I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life from that moment. Thanks to these childhood ski trips, Wanaka has now become my home but I spend most time travelling around the world pursuing snow and winter.
After finishing school in 2009, I enrolled in the Otago Polytechnic Certificate in Snow Sports Instruction and Avalanche Safety management. This course included the NZSIA levels 1 and 2 certification. After completing the course and spending some time in New Zealand I decided to head off to snowy Canada where I worked for the Mt Seymour Snow Sports School in Vancouver B.C. Mt Seymour was a small ski resort but it gave me a great introduction to being a ski instructor and travelling and living overseas.
After this first season teaching skiing in Canada, the ‘ski life’ has taken me on a journey to teach and ski all around the world in amazing places like Verbier Switzerland, Niseko Japan, Lake Tahoe USA and Chongli China. I was lucky enough to attend the Interski congress in Pamporovo Bulgaria in 2019 where I was a member of the NZSIA Interski Team.
I love skiing because it is not just sliding down a mountain, it is a never ending evolution. You are constantly learning how to be a better skier, how to be a better teacher and meeting awesome people who share the same passions. As a skier you get to travel to all different places around the world and experience new cultures with one common interest - skiing.
After travelling all around the world, gaining many different skills and learning from all aspects of the ski industry, I am very excited to be starting The Ski Co.
A big thank you to my supporters for helping me on this journey:
Head, Play Snowsports, Shred and Allsports Distribution and of course, my parents Lynette and John.
I would love to meet you on the slopes for a ski.
